January 22, 2011
Tomorrow is Alyssa's birthday. Today is her party. She will be 8 years old. old? Why don't we say 8 years young? I think I will. 8 years young. old is like...I'm 54 years old. She wanted to have her party at Johnny G's in Warner Robins. So, that's what we're going to do. Where there are things for all ages of children. Balls to jump in, courses to climb and tumble in, little elephants like at a fair to ride to go in circles, many, many things. We went there last year and they had a blast. Nieces, nephews, siblings, and some friends make it all a fun gathering...just be able to stand a bunch of screaming little children that act like they've been let out of cages going wild! :) But that's what they're suppose to be doing in a place like Johnny G's. Why didn't they have places like that when I was little? Why? I'll tell you why.
When I was little, we found our enjoyment outside doing almost the same things. Running wild in our yards, or our neighbors yards playing all kinds of games, going to the creek down the road or 2 streets over to catch crawdad's and tadpoles. Where if we wanted to go in the woods and make paths to cut across to the shopping center it was ok..and safe. Where we cut paths through the woods from our neighborhood to the next neighborhood to go to our best friends house or our school friends when we didn't have to worry about disappearing and never being found..or worse yet, being found...dead. I remember being outside until 10 or 11 at night, at home, in our yard, with there could be as many as 10 kids at our house playing chase, or hide and seek, or better yet, girls chase the boys or boys chase the girls! That's what we did back then. It's a terrible thing now that if you're outside playing, your mom or dad or grandparent better be out there watching with keen eyes, cause you can disappear even if you go around a corner, at night, or daylight.
No way would I allow my child now or grandchild to play in the woods down the road, much less, 2 streets over where there was nothing BUT woods to cut across to a shopping center. Go to a shopping center like that at 11, 12? Now? You'd have to have your head examined to allow that nowadays. What a shame. So, now this generation growing up won't get to enjoy being able to be out there with friends, without a adult hovering over them saying "no, it's not safe". Oh they're out there now, but it's with watchful eyes, at least some have watchful eyes to guard you. So, on pretty days, it might be a little chilly like today, but that really meant nothing to us growing up, we bundled up or didn't. You know cold just doesn't affect children like it does us adults. So then, on pretty days, we'd be outside finding something to do. Not bad things, fun and inventive things.
Today, it's go inside and run around inside, like you're outside, screaming, yelling, running, etc. And we'll have fun though. Cause they have fun. And I'll be glad Alyssa will have enjoyed herself, and I'll go home with the sounds lingering in my ears of screaming children, and I'll make it home, and go straight to my shed where I keep my marguarita's!
Oh what fun shall be had today!! Really!
